Following the money trail in the Honduran coup

Going to bat for an illegal coup used to be the job of shadowy CIA
operatives back in the good ol' days of the Cold War.

But that is bygone era. Today’s junta-enablers no longer have to work
in secret. In fact, illegal usurpers can now shop openly in Washington
for a hired gun of their choosing to grease the wheels of Congress and
commerce to assure their coup d'état remains a fait accompli.

Enter Lanny Davis — a long-time friend and Yale Law School chum of
Hillary Clinton and former White House Counsel to Bill Clinton [as
well as a consummate shill for their agendas].

Davis also is a lawyer and lobbyist now employed by the D.C. office of
global law firm Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe. In that capacity,
Davis was recently retained by the Business Council of Latin America
(CEAL) to hawk for the coup in Honduras — or as is the preferred
description among the pushers of simulation, the administration of “de
facto” Honduran President Roberto Micheletti [elected by virtue of
having cast the most bullets in deposing the people’s choice in
Honduras, President Manuel Zelaya).

Davis is now scampering about the Hill setting up meetings with
Congressional insiders and throwing money around on advertising and
other such frills to build a case for supporting the new militarily
elected Honduran regime.

Davis may be many things, but one thing he is not is cheap. So the
question is begged: Whose paying for this charade?

The best way to get a peek under those covers most certainly should be
to take a look at who is in bed with CEAL, Davis’ current contract
employer.

Well, here’s the scoop on the pecuniary bedfellows:

Camilo Alejandro Atala Faraj, president of the Honduras chapter of
CEAL, also happens to be a vice president of a major banking
institution in Honduras, Banco Financiera Comercial Hondurena S.A [or
Banco Ficohsa), which is part of the financial holding company Grupo
Financiero Ficohsa.

The president of the lender is an individual named Jorge Alejandro
Faraj Rishmagui, and at least three other bank managers have last
names indicating they are likely related to the Faraj clan.

Current information on the bank is a bit hard to come by, at least in
English, but it seems the lender did make a filing with the U.S.
Federal Reserve System in 2005, that states, in part, the following:

Order Approving Establishment of a Representative Office

Banco Financiera Comercial Hondurena, S.A. (“Bank”), Tegucigalpa,
Honduras, a foreign bank within the meaning of the International
Banking Act (“IBA”), has applied under section 10(a) of the IBA (12
U.S.C. § 3107(a)) to establish a representative office in Mi ami,
Florida. The Foreign Bank Supervision Enhancement Act of 1991, which
amended the IBA, provides that a foreign bank must obtain the approval
of the Board to establish a representative office in the United
States.

The Bank, with total consolidated assets of approximately $612
million, is the fourth largest commercial bank in Honduras and
provides wholesale and retail banking services through a network of
domestic branches.

In the United States, [the] Bank has licenses to operate nonbank
subsidiaries in Florida, Georgia, New York, North Carolina, and
Virginia that engage in money remittance services.

So, it seems Banco Ficohsa has both Honduran and U.S. interests to
protect in throwing its lot in with the new usurper regime.

And interestingly, one of the criticisms of the Zelaya government is
that it has not been sufficiently pro-business — tending toward
friendly relations with that pesky populist Hugo Chavez.

The Honduran banking community is not all that large, at least by U.S.
standards, with only a couple dozen banks operating in the country —
and only a small slate of foreign-owned banks, one of which happens to
be Citigroup. That famous brand name bank, of course, was once home to
Robert Rubin, who served as its director, executive committee chair
and briefly as chairman — after a stint as Treasury Secretary under
Bill Clinton and before that as a suit at Goldman Sachs.

Citigroup, under its subsidiary Citibank Overseas Investment Corp.,
operates Banco Citibank de Honduras S.A. Now, given the cozy size of
Honduras’ banking industry, it’s likely Citigroup and Banco Ficohsa
officials have shared some wine and cheese over discussions of global
politics and free trade, but there is no indication at this point that
any Citigroup money is in the pot to pay Davis’ lobbying expenses on
behalf of CEAL.

Another player in CEAl, listed as the vice president of the Honduran
Chapter, is Jesus Canahuati, who is an executive vice president with a
Honduran company called Elasticos Centroamericanos y Textiles, which
is part of a Honduran conglomerate called Grupo Lovable.

Founded by an entrepreneur named Juan Canahuati in the 1960s, Grupo
Lovable now ranks as one of Honduras’ largest employers and has
operations in textiles, water and sewage treatment, industrial parks
and even an electric plant. Canahuati is credited as being one of the
nation’s visionaries in pushing for free-trade and opening up Honduras
to U.S. investment.

And yet another player in CEAL, listed as its “coordinator,” is an
individual named Miguel Mauricio Facusse Saenz, who lists his
corporate affiliation as being with Corporación Dinant S.A., which is
a subsidiary of another Honduran mega-business called the Grupo Dinant
Cos. — which produces snacks, agricultural products and food products.

Just this past June, the Inter-American Investment Corp. (IIC)
provided Grupo Dinant with a loan package worth up to $7 million. The
IIC is part of the Inter-American Development Bank, which is based in
Washington, D.C., and is charged with fostering economic and social
development in Latin America. Luis Alberto Moreno, a Colombian
diplomat, currently heads the bank.

But it appears the IIC isn’t the only entity that has lent Grupo
Dinant money. A short news item carried by Summa News indicates that a
syndicate of banks, including Banco Financiera Comercial Hondurena,
last spring provided Grupo Dinant subsidiary Corporación Dinant with a
$77 million loan.

So, it seems the business interests behind CEAL are flush with cash,
enough of it anyway to line Davis’ pockets for the foreseeable future
as he seeks to legitimize the bloody Honduran coup in the eyes of
Congress and, apparently, for the benefit of commerce.

Odigo says workers were warned of attack

received messages two hours before the Twin Towers attack on September
11 predicting the attack would happen, and the company has been
cooperating with Israeli and American law enforcement, including the
FBI, in trying to find the original sender of the message predicting

don't know the sender. It may just have been someone who was joking
and turned out they accidentally got it right. And I don't know if our

Amiri Baraka's Somebody Blew Up America
Poetry as Treason?

It seems you not only have to be careful what you say, as White House
spokesman Ari Fleischer warned last year, but also what you write,
especially if you are an African-American poet with a Muslim name and
Marxist politics.

On September 19, Amiri Baraka, an influential beat poet and founder of
the Black Arts Repertory Theatre in Harlem, read a recent poem,
"Somebody Blew Up America," at the 2002 Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry
Festival at Waterloo Village in Stanhope, New Jersey. Note the
following lines from the poem:

Who knew the World Trade Center was gonna get bombed
Who told 4000 Israeli workers at the Twin Towers To stay home that day
Why did Sharon stay away?

Since Baraka read his poem in September, popular news commentators and
powerful political organizations have called for the revocation of his
status as poet laureate of New Jersey, an honorary title which pays
him a modest salary of $10,000 per year. Even though he wrote the poem
last October, ten months before taking on the title as poet laureate,
New Jersey Governor James E. McGreevey wants Baraka to resign and
apologize.

Obviously, McGreevey doesn't know Baraka too well. "Amiri Baraka ain't
never been your Polite Negro Poet," writes Lee Bailey on EUR, a
website covering black entertainment and culture. "So you have to
wonder what the New Jersey powers-that-be were thinking when they
named him Poet Laureate of NJ?" In fact, Baraka warned the governor
something like this might happen. "I said, 'Governor, you're going to
catch a lot of hell for this,'" Baraka told the New York Times. "He
said, 'I don't care.' I said, 'If you don't care, I don't care.'"

But the Anti-Defamation League does care and is leaning on McGreevey
to get rid of Amiri Baraka....

Few people take poets seriously, even in New Jersey, home of famous
poets, including Walt Whitman, William Carlos Williams, and Allen
Ginsberg. Now, instead of ignoring poets, more than a few Americans
condemn them, especially if the poets are Muslim and hold views
contrary to the US government -- and particularly if those
"anti-American" views are broadcast via the corporate media, from the
reactionary Bill O'Reilly on Fox News to the pages of the New York
Times.

As for Baraka's assertion that both the US and Israeli government had
prior knowledge of the September 11 attacks, there is clear, ample,
and documented evidence they most certainly did. Consider the
following:

Newsbytes reported on September 27, 2001, that employees of Odigo, an
instant messaging company in Herzliyya, Israel, received messages
warning of the attacks two hours before they occurred. Alex Diamandis,
vice president of sales and marketing for Odigo, confirmed that
workers in Israeli received the messages. The story was subsequently
carried by CNN and Ha'aretz in Israel.....

None of this, of course, was mentioned in The New York Times article
on Baraka, nor did the reactionary O'Reilly mention it when he
questioned Baraka's motives or patriotism (and also called him a
"pinhead") on Murdoch's Fox News... Finally, the following lines of
Amiri Baraka's poem should be considered far more inflammatory and
indictable by the "powers-that-be" than any accusations of
anti-Semitism put forward by the ADL:

So why would John McCain 'fire' Christopher 'Naked Shorts' Cox
who also raves about the dangers of
'naked short selling' just as he himself does ?! Is McCain part of the

Resistance Consolidating Changes in Honduras

Tegucigalpa - People's unity and their determination to revert the
military coup have consolidated the Honduran people hopes for
achieving a truly fair participative democracy in Honduras, said
left-wing presidential candidate Cesar Ham.

Zelaya Vows to Return to Honduras In statements to Prensa Latina, Ham
who presented himself as candidate for the Democratic Unified Party
(UD in Spanish) added that peoples' resistance confirmed the
possibility of changing the conditions of misery and exploitation his
country is living.

There was Honduras before the June 28 coup, and there is another after
it, he said.

The constitutional order in the country was broken last June 28 when
masked troops kidnapped President Manuel Zelaya and forced into exile
in Costa Rica.

When the news was heard popular leaders and thousands of people
gathered in front of the presidential house demanding Zelaya's return
and condemning coup leaders.

Marches and demonstration have been going for 21 days, in spite of
brutal repression by the armed forces, he recalled.

With such facts, we are hopeful that we will be able to make necessary
changes in the exploitating structures that have plunged Hondurans
into misery, he expressed.

Ham showed his refusal and that of UD to international maneuvers aimed
at trying to deprive the Honduras people of the opportunity of
fighting oligarchy and military coup leaders.

He also noted that UD has clearly expressed its position regarding the
US-backed mediation by Costa Rica President Oscar Arias.

The dialogue process should only seek the unconditional return of
president Manuel Zelaya to the government, he emphasized.

He added that those who violated the Constitution, human rights and

media advisor, The Cable has learned.
Citing unnamed sources, CQ's Jeff Stein first broke the story,
subsequently echoed in the New York Times, that sometime between 2004
and 2005, Harman was asked by an interlocutor already under U.S.
government surveillance and described as a suspected "Israeli agent"
to help seek leniency for two former officials with the pro-Israel
lobby group AIPAC. The two men were indicted in 2005 on charges
related to unauthorized disclosure of national defense information.

Coup latest attempt to stop a new constitution to help the people

The largest indigenous organizations in Honduras are calling for the
immediate return of deposed President Manuel Zelaya, and they assert
that the new administration is trying to hide the real reason for the
coup, which was that the opposition feared a new constitution that
could provide more rights and protections to indigenous and other
Hondurans.

The groups also said the coup leadership was preventing indigenous
people from protesting, forcing the military recruitment of children,
active persecution of leaders and creating a “black list” of
resistance leaders (including protest against the recently enacted
suspension of the rights of free speech, free assembly, and protection
against illegal search and torture.)
While mainstream coverage of the crisis has focused on objections made
against the coup by most Latin American presidents, the Organization
of American States, U.S. President Barack Obama and the United
Nations, the indigenous peoples of Honduras have been active in
expressing their outrage at the coup d’etat of June 28, when Honduran
soldiers took Zelaya from his home at gunpoint, and put him on a plane
headed for El Salvador.

According to press sources, Zelaya acted illegally in June when he
pushed ahead for a non-binding referendum to be held in November along
with regular elections. This referendum/survey would have asked
Hondurans whether they wanted to convene a constituent assembly that
could then rewrite the Honduran constitution. The National Congress
and the Honduran Supreme Court ruled the referendum was illegal and
that the president could not go ahead with the plan.

Zelaya persisted, and fired General Romeo Vasquez, head of the Armed
Forces (and graduate of the U.S. School of the Americas), for refusing
to deliver the ballot boxes to election sites.
Many press accounts emphasized the idea that the chief executive was
interested in creating a new law to allow him to run again, and that
he was a puppet of President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela. But Zelaya’s
indigenous supporters are saying they were in favor of the referendum
because it could give Native peoples a chance at re-writing the
constitution to give them more rights and protections of their
territories; and when the president was deposed, indigenous peoples
reacted quickly.

From June 28 to July 5, indigenous groups like the Civic Council of
Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH), the
Indigenous Coordinating Body of Mesoamerica and the Caribbean (CIMCA)
and MASTA or Moskitia United, issued press releases outlining a list
of demands and concerns, all connected to Zelaya’s forcible removal by
the military.

The groups publicized these positions in the many demonstrations that
have occurred on an almost daily basis since June 28 (including the
demonstration July 6 at the national airport that drew more than
100,000 people in favor of the president’s return).......

Edgardo Benitez Maclin, a Tawahka leader and Regional Coordinator for
CIMCA, responded to requests for comment by sending a series of press
statements outlining the issues for Native peoples in Honduras.
According to Benitez, the Lenca, Miskitu, Tawahka, Pech, Maya-Chorti,
Tolupan, Garifuna, Creole, Nahoa and Chorotega peoples contributed
jointly to each of the press releases.......
In another document, entitled “Public Condemnation,” the groups list
eight complaints.

“The Army and National Police has not ceased in its harassment,
beating, and threatening of indigenous peoples and has removed the
right to free movement of those who seek to travel to the capital of
Tegucigalpa to protest publicly and peacefully for the
re-establishment of constitutional order and the return of President
Manuel Zelaya.”

The CIMCA document states that the “… National Congress. … has
suspended all of the constitutional guarantees. …” Along with that
suspension media has been affected; according to the press statement
issued separately by COPINH, “… the guarantee for free movement
continues to be violated in that buses full of people continue to be
detained along the highways. Also they have fortified the gag rule so
that local and community radio stations or those commercial stations
that wanted to present a version of the events that was different from
that of the coup leaders were closed, destroyed or threatened.” These
charges were echoed by the OAS’ Inter-American Commission on Human
Rights in one of its press statements issued June 29, the day after
the coup.

“The Office of the Special Rapporteur received information that since
June 28, 2009, in Honduras, local and international media have been
suffering severe limitations to freely accomplish their work.
According to the information received, open broadcast media outlets
have been closed; while other cable channels, such as Telesur and CNN
en Español and other radios such as Globo, were banned from
broadcasting.

“Moreover, energy was cut off, which prevented television and radio
from broadcasting, as well as the access to the Internet. According to
the information received, many reporters were attacked while they were
working, and others were arbitrarily retained; such was the case of
Adriana Sivori, Rudy Quiróz, and other members of Telesur team.
Cartoonist Allan McDonald would have been detained with his
17-month-old daughter. Finally, it was informed that many journalists
would have been receiving threats in order to make them stop
reporting,” stated IACHR.......

The IACHR highlighted some details of the accusations about detention
and threats in another June 29 press release. “According to
information received by the IACHR, military forces have been
surrounding the house of Bertha Cáceres, member of the Civic Council
of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras. Military forces
have allegedly also surrounded the house of César Ham, Representative
in the National Congress by the Partido Unificación Democrática. The
military also allegedly fired on Representative Ham’s house with
machine-guns. Additionally, Edran Amado López, a journalist on the TV
Channel 36 program ‘Cholusatsur,’ was allegedly detained and his
whereabouts remain unknown.”

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton held a "very tough phone
call" with the caretaker president(Roberto Micheletti), warning him he
could face cuts in economic aid unless he strikes a deal with his
