consume it .I noted Chinese melamine news does not really say WHO
makes it and all those convicted or blamed for the mess don't seem to be manufacturers at all but secondary
consumers of the product to put in feed and food products to confuse

Disclosure,now that would be a real patriotic thing for the Huntsman's
to do now wouldn't it ? They are planning to partner with Dow Chemical to make an isocyanate product I believe in Australia or China.Don't think its Dow famous methyl isocianate but it could be just as 'neat'.I don't think they're making it in Bhopal this time around however.

We are the first truly global
'civilization',almost in danger of becoming a world 'mono-culture',

across to identfy the source of melamine undustrial molecules as well
as the tragically toxic melamine poisoning from food products inside
and exported outside of China.Note the competition between countries
producing melamine particularly Japan and European countries as well
as the Chinese government strategy to virtually dump melamine produced
in China in order to hurt the European exporters.Then after flooding
the market in 2007 with cheap Chinese produced melamine that even
caused, 'Major European melamine producer, Agrolinz Melamine to close
down its melamine plant in Castellanza, Italy International
(AMI)at least temporarily.

And yet one year after the article below it was not only not scarce in China,melamine was being used as a
'protein replacement! Besides these companies putting it in supposed vegetarian and dairy and dog food products who have gotten more media attention are those companies guilty of allowing their melamine product that at most should be used in plastic and fertilizer manufacture to be allowed into the hands of the 'food' processors of China or anywhere else in the first place !

Also note my inclusion of news item stating that PetroChina unit Urumqi PetroChemical Co is also a producer of both melamine and methyl isocyante the of Bhopal,India tragedy of the early 1980's along with DOW,who were directly responsible for Bhopal and of the U.S.Ambassador designate to China's daddy and brother whose Huntsman Corp also apparently manufactures this toxic molecule in Chinas and elsewhere !

SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Japanese melamine makers have raised third
quarter contract offers by about 10% on tight supply, producers said
on Thursday.

Rising Chinese prices following recent subsidy cuts also contributed
to the higher contract offers of $1,200-1,250/tonne CFR (cost and
freight) southeast (SE) Asia, they added.

Spot offers of Chinese melamine have subsequently risen by
$80-100/tonne to $1,130/tonne as producers tried to make up for the 8%
cut in the export tax subsidy. The export tax rebate for Chinese
melamine was reduced to 5% from 13% from 1 July.

European melamine producers have capitalised on the Chinese situation
by spiking third quarter contract offers by as high as €85/tonne
($115/tonne), up from the original targeted increases of €30-50/tonne
as lower subsidies curbed Chinese exports.

“With the Chinese and European producers raising their prices, we plan
to target a $150/tonne hike to $1,250/tonne CFR SE Asia for third
quarter contracts,” a Japanese producer said.

The Chinese government recently announced a slew of subsidy cuts
effective 1 July for a wide range of Chinese exports, including
minerals, chemicals, plastics and rubber products in a bid to redress
ballooning trade surplus with the West.

Chinese urea and melamine makers have also been forced to shut down
some of their units in the urban areas and relocate to less densely
populated areas in the face of rising environmental concerns.

“Supply is tight and we are looking at a minimum of $1,200/tonne CFR
SE Asia for the third quarter business,” another Japanese producer
said.

Apart from dwindling Chinese material, global supply has also be
curtailed following a spate of plant closures in Europe and Asia due
to competition from Chinese producers.....

Major European melamine producer, Agrolinz Melamine International
(AMI), closed down its 50,000 tonne/year melamine plant in
Castellanza, Italy, in March.

Japanese melamine producer, Mitsubishi Chemicals also shut down its
35,000 tonne/year plant in Kashima in March, citing unfavourable
market conditions.

Other Asian producers withdrew from the export market due to
competition from the lower-priced Chinese melamine, including Taiwan
Fertilizer.

The Taiwanese melamine producer slashed its operating rate and focused
instead on the domestic market.

When Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. wanted lawmakers meeting in special session
last month to adopt a new law targeting stock trading abuse, few
considered it urgent, and Wall Street officials say the law will hurt publicly traded Utah firms.

But Patrick Byrne wanted it. And the CEO of Overstock.com, a
Utah-based online retailer of excess inventories, gave $75,000 to
Huntsman's 2004 gubernatorial campaign — by far the most that any
individual gave him.

Huntsman spokesman Mike Mower said Huntsman did speak briefly with
Byrne in a telephone call on the subject during the 2006 Legislature,
but not since. And Scott Blevins, spokesman for Byrne, insists the big
donations did not grease enactment but rather "the importance of the
issue alone got lawmakers' attention."

But many bills that failed in the 2006 general session didn't get the
special treatment of going on the May 13 special session agenda....

introduced the Currency Reform for Fair Trade Act of 2009 in both

Chem demand to benefit from stimulus measures - US Huntsman

“March was a stronger month than January or February,” CEO Peter
Huntsman(Jon Huntsman Jr.'s brother) said during an earnings conference call.

Huntsman posted a net loss of $290m (€217.5m) in the 2009 first
quarter, down from a $7m gain in the same period last year due to
lower demand across businesses, the company said.

Group sales dropped 33% year on year to $1.69bn, compared with $2.54bn
in the first quarter of 2008.

Huntsman's chief executive credited China’s economic stimulus
programme with a broad recovery in Asian demand, and said it gave the
company optimism that the US economy would also rebound as projects
funded through the US stimulus bill roll in over the next several
months.

He expressed particular optimism on the future of global demand for
methyl di-p-phenylene isocyanate (MDI), which he anticipated
increasing due to stimulus spending in China and the US related to

BEIJING (AP) — China's judiciary is warning law firms to rein in
lawyers who take up human rights and other politically sensitive
cases, lawyers said Wednesday, increasing the pressure in a government
campaign that has so far failed to curb growing legal activism.

Lawyers said authorities had met or talked on the phone with senior
members of at least nine law firms in recent weeks, urging them to not
seek the renewal of licenses for certain lawyers or to submit partial
applications that would allow authorities to reject them on
technicalities.

If carried through, the disbarments would mark the broadest effort in
recent years by China's authoritarian government to rein in a growing
number of activist lawyers.

"Before they used to pressure individuals but now they have turned to
this more systematic method," said Tang Jitian, whose employer, the
Anhui Law Firm in Beijing, was among those warned. "The justice
departments say the lawyers who defend human rights are inharmonious
or unstable elements, but I think they are the ones who are unstable."

The campaign will have a "chilling effect" on the Chinese legal
profession even if the lawyers currently under threat manage to get
their licenses back, said Nicholas Bequelin, Asia researcher for New
York-based Human Rights Watch.

Bhopal residents bring MIC warnings

Their appearance is part of a 25-city tour of the United States taking
place on the 25th anniversary of the disaster in Bhopal, India, that
killed thousands.

Sarita Malviya, 16, of Bhopal, India, tells an audience at West
Virginia State University that contaminated drinking water and a
birth-defect rate five times the national average are among the
lingering effects of a 1984 MIC release from a Carbide chemical plant
that killed thousands in her hometown.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Sarita Malviya wasn't born when an explosion at a
Union Carbide chemical plant in Bhopal, India, on Dec. 3, 1984, sent a
cloud of deadly gas containing the compound methyl isocyanate into the
old section of the city, searing the lungs and causing the deaths of
at least 4,000 people.

When her family moved to Bhopal years after the world's worst
industrial disaster, "we had no idea that Union Carbide left toxic
waste in three ponds," she said through an interpreter.

Heavy metals and toxins were seeping into the groundwater, she said,
contaminating drinking water used by 30,000 people, including members
of her family........

Two years ago at the age of 14, she became a founding member of
Children Against Dow/Carbide, an organization trying to force the
former chemical giant and the company that bought it to fix lingering
environmental problems and fund the study of related public health
issues.

"On the night of the Bhopal disaster, 40 tons of MIC was being stored

Factory linked to tainted food found closed

XUZHOU, China -- Before Mao Lijun's business exported tainted wheat
products that may have killed U.S. pets, his factory sickened people
and plants around here for years.

Farmers in this poor rural area 400 miles northwest of Shanghai had
complained to local government officials since 2004 that Mao's factory
was spewing noxious fumes that made their eyes tear up and the poplar
trees nearby shed their leaves prematurely. Yet no one stopped Mao's
company from churning out bags of food powders and belching smoke --
until one day last month when, in the middle of the night, bulldozers
tore down the facility.

It wasn't authorities that finally acted: Mao himself razed the brick
factory -- days before the investigators from the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration arrived in China on a mission to track down the source
of the tainted pet food ingredients.

U.S. inspectors said Thursday the suspect facilities had been hastily
closed down.

"There is nothing to be found. They are essentially shut down and not
operating," said Walter Batts, deputy director of the Food and Drug
Administration's (FDA) office of international programs.

Liu Zhaoyi, 64, a farmer who lives next to Mao's now-demolished
factory, recalled seeing globs of white and yellowish scrap, which may
have included melamine, piled in the yard behind the plant. One season
after rains, Liu said, water with residue from the compound flowed
into his family's cornfields and killed the crops.

Few people in town, which has a large food-manufacturing industry,
seemed to know what Mao's factory made.

An Environment Protection Bureau official in Pei county, which is a
part of Xuzhou, said one of his colleagues had visited Mao's facility
in recent years when it was processing yeast and wheat. The inspection
did not turn up any serious violations, and neighbors were told to
complain to a court or another agency.

This is about counterfeit products and intellectual property rights.
In 2008, the United States Customs Office reported on seizures of
counterfeit products. The document claims that counterfeit electrical
products are in the top five categories, seizures were 43% greater
than 2007, and most of the fakes came from China and Hong Kong. One
strategy is to sell the knockoffs, not in the country that produces
them, but in countries to which the legitimate versions are being
exported. That way, the fakes can wreck the manufacturer’s export
